Concussion Problem

First off, I feel this could go in 2 other threads, but I put it here.

I had a concussion problem about 7 years ago through playing hockey which included 2 concussions and bout with Post Concussion Syndrome all in one season.

On Friday I was boxing sparring and got hit pretty hard repeatedly, with headgear, and to quote Rogan, I was rocked. I had a bad headache the rest of the night, but dont know for sure if it was a concussion. Anyway, I'm only 23 (the hockey problems happened at 16, not a good age to be getting concussions) and am looking to be a police officer. After Friday I kinda had to take a step back and think that MMA might not be the best thing for me if I'm way more susceptable to getting hurt by head shots. Which sucks cuz I like doing MMA and muay thai.

So, based on the fact that I want to be a police officer, should I just stick to grappling (no-gi), take up BJJ or Judo? I'd still like to be able to compete. Any suggestions would be great. It's pretty shitty that I might have to make this decision but I dont want to put my future at risk.

Thanks

Any kind of head injury can be really serious and have long term health effects. If you got rocked and felt after effects for a while, you should go get checked out by a sports medicine doctor. That doctor will also be able to tell you if your history will lead to more problems. Good luck...

I would recommend to keep sparing, but just let your partner know to take it easy. Also, I am a police officer and any department you try to get on will pull your medical record. A history of concussions could lead to a liabilty problem for that department and could affect you getting hired. I still spar and play hockey and have had only one concussion in my 35 years. Good luck in the future with your law enforcement career.

most people get headaches after hard sparring , especially the first few times they do it. i wouldnt b too worried about it. i dont think 3 concussions is a problem , in fact most people probably end up with 1 or 2 concussions jus from messing round as kids.

Boxing is the worst thing you could possibly do for your brain. Stick with grappling arts.

I've had/have post concussion syndrome from a car accident in 2001. I still have problems 5 and a half years later. I've had numerous concussions/been KO'd growing up. Even wrestling isn't safe as I was hip tossed onto my head and KO'd during sparring with an older team mate in high school.

Take care of yourself. If you have to do something different with your life, do it. You can't put a price on your health, believe me.

Holy shit! Are you my evil twin or something? I'm from Vancouver, I've had concussion problems before and I'm working towards a career with the VPD as well.

Check your PM's!
