Funnily enough I was doing a lot of longer HR based sessions on the elliptical and my fitness shot up (example, no running, within 3 months of consistant training I pulled a 8 minute 31 second 1.5 miler at 85 kg).

I have seen grossly out of condition people transform themselves just using the elliptical.

Surprising how just keeping your HR up for a prolonged period will carry over to other things.

That's pretty f-in fast. I used the elliptical when I went to the gym everyday. I have severe shin splint issues and knee problems. I used to run a mile in under 7 minutes.

My 2 mile now is a little over 22 minutes. It just gets too painful to keep a good pace. My breathing is fine and I feel good, but I just can't do it. I tried to push myself yesterday and only made it 3/4 of a mile before the pain was too severe. I need to have them looked at and take time off. So anything cardio related that is not running is helpful. Maybe I should be walking a lot more. I'm looking for fat burning workouts. My 2 mile was also slow because I was planning on doing 3.1 or a 5K. So I was trying to keep a good pace. But again, the pain was too much.

I was thinking of using Icy Hot pads as well... any thoughts?

I'm not an expert on knee damage but I hope you are doing some good dynamic stretches before your runs, and then make sure to stretch those calves to avoid shin splints

Fiance used to teach gymnastics, so she is helping me out there. I got my knee problems from growing about a foot in less than 4 months. It put me in a wheel chair to crutches to braces. I was always a fast runner and the pain went away. I used to play middle linebacker in high school. I was running at night and slipped off a curb and broke my ankle. That is when the knee pain started. I healed up and too a hit to the legs and then it's just been down hill. I can still run, but it will hurt for no reason some days. Even if I'm just sitting on the couch. I wake up really stiff and I have to walk sideways down the stairs in the morning. After a couple minutes, I'm good to go.

Biking is great for people who have had injuries. If you want something a bit more intense and interesting I'd advise looking into single track mountain biking. It beats you up a bit but once you get into the groove it becomes really addicting. The only problem is if you are doing some intense stuff you need a buddy because getting hurt in the woods isn't all that cool especially when wiping out on a rock is common. When you hit the climbs and the more technical stuff it definately gives you a good work out and elevates your heart rate significantly, best of all it is really fun and you don't get easily bored like with the typical monotonous cardio.
