Cardio vs. resistance training for body fat loss?

I'm going through the process of getting my body fat % back down to what it was younger and in better shape. I used to be in great shape when i was in the Navy, but after 10 years of marrage and kids, I haven't had the time to stay on top of my game, and am just now finding the time to get serious about training and getting back into optimal shape.

My question is for pure fat burn sessions, what would be more time effective and benificial : a cardio workout with the treadmill, eliptical, and cycle, or resistance training with weights.

I am enrolled in a very large gym with a huge selection of equipment so most options are open to me.

Your input and thoughts are appreiciated.

Both, you'll get the most gains or in this cases losses from a complete program. All in all though if you want to lose fat, clean up your diet or you'll just be spinning your wheels in the mud.

Your dead on about getting the diet in line.

Cleaning up my food intake was the first step, and it actually was alot easier then I thought it was going to be. I feel good about were my diet is now, and I'm concentrating on the workouts.

You need both. If you don't do resistance work, you're more likely to lose lean mass. I've found things like complexes to be good for this.

Lift heavy weights and do the different cardio routines while your upper body is still sore.

Lift heavy weights, Cardio will help as well but your better off just lifting. By adding more muscle to your body you increase the amount of overall calories you burn throughout the day which is the end goal, To loose fat/weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. HIIT for cardio is your best option as prolonged cardio sessions can actually result in the loss of muscle which is your fat burning power.

research HIST (high intensity strength training) It specializes in brief fullbody workouts. I have had great results with clients using this style of training for fatloss but as some previous people said make sure your diet is sorted b4 hand.
