Icon12 Can't keep up...

I've got a friend whos really strong, fast, and skilled. He probably weighs in at around 160 or so at about 5'10'. I'm about 5'11 and 185. When we train I really can't hold a candle to him standing, but when it comes to grappling I can easily tire him out. I have recently enrolled in a gym and I was wondering what I can do as far as training/dieting goes to even out my chances. Thanks guys!

Practice stand-up?

hrm i dont really understand the question at hand here. The issue seems very vague here but ill try.

A lot of people that are physically stronger seem to not feel it when they are in an "uncomfortable" setting. This is due to 1. obviously the competition is just technically better and able to conserve energy. 2. Your breathing techniques are completely out of whack and people forget to breath

For a really long time i was getting gassed out rolling when i could outrun so many of the guys on the mat. I FINALLY realized that i was holding my breath during bursts of energy that was just completely draining my energy. Focus on breathing if you arent already

hope that helps.

oh yah and practice stand-up ^^^

When I was training BJJ, I realized I could go an indefinite amount of time on the mat. 90% of the guys I rolled with were technically superior to me.

Of course, I weighed in at 190 at the time, while most everyone else was around 140-160. I didn't have to put forth much effort on the ground, while they did. Meanwhile, when it comes to standup, I gassed much quicker due to my larger size.

Your problem probably has something to do with this.

i agree with this anecdote i would say rolling has a greater emphasis on weight as you are having to actually pick up and move your competition at times causing a greater amount of work. So your partner is having to lug around 30 extra pounds on the ground but in stand-up you is just working you with speed.

dont try to just tire him out youll find that youll have a much more difficult time against people your size if you arent focusing on techniques rather then just throwing him around
