Calf Pain..

Not quite sure this would go...but anyhow...

Ok well here is whats going on....I havent really done much of anything since Ive had a year lay off from fighting..I recently started playing basketball....

Well when i start running I get a major major cramp im my calves...the outside of them get extremely tight and it makes it hard to really run or do anything....Im drinking enough water and too the best of my knowlege im taking in enough potasium...does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

I figured maybe it was because I havent really run or anything in a long time but this has been a problem for about two weeks now...

I know I'm gonna sound like a smart ass but I don't mean it that way, but are you stretching properly before and after playing ball?

You're out of shape for the the cardio repettions. so calves aren't used to the stop and go movements.

You could have an achilles strain or slight tear. It feels like a cramp in the calf and you usually feel it within a short time after your workout starts. It feels like a tightening or sharp pain in the outside or lower part of your calf a few inches above the ankle. The pain can actually be higher though since your achilles runs all the way up. These types of strains are often caused by adding hills or sprint work into your workout to quickly or with improper warmup- or any power work with your legs on a hard surface (basketball).

Since it is actually a tear, it does take some time to rehab, but if you don't treat it right and give it some time to rest it can become chronic. It wiped out an entire summer of running for me one year because I didn't know what it was at first and then I failed to treat it and kept trying to work through it. If this sounds like what you have I can direct you to some websites to show you how to treat it and condition it to not to happen again.
