I like Saucony, but I by no means endorse them for everyone. You just have to wear a bunch and find the ones that work for you. A lot of the guys I know swear by Brooks but they just don't work for me. I think it's a very individual thing that can only be found through trial and error.
Or else go to one of those hardcore running shoe stores and have them measure your feet in a bunch of ways and tell you what's best.

go to a real running shoe store (not foot locker or champs).
they'll take a look at your feet, arch and watch how you walk.

Reeboks are the oldschool classics which I highly reccomend ( I am sponsored by Reebok now so I got the info on the shoes.) But if you want to go all the way and spend the money I suggest getting shoes from a professional running shoe store where they can take all your measurements and everything to get a shoe 100% attuned to your liking.

I used to wear nikes but they keep changing thier style every year. I have been using New Balance and they have been great.

The overall best brands for running shoes are Asics and Adidas, the most would say Asics is a bit ahead, but it's a matter of liking, there are different good brands though. I have currently the Adidas Supernova Cushion, it's a great shoe, but it doesnt mean it would fit you as it does for me. If you are serious about running you should inves in good shoes that fit you, although they could get expensive. You definatly should go to a real running shoe store as it already was mentioned. Don't let them foist some competition shoes on you, you need training shoes. Competition shoes may be a little cheaper and lighter but they are not made to last. Training shoes usualy have a lifespan of at least 500 miles, the lifespan of competition shoes is 100 miles at max! A tip is to go to the shoe store, recieve the consultation, let them make you try several shoes and remember the names and the sizing of those you liked. Later you say none of those shoes actualy were comfortable, complain about their unproffesionalism, then you go home and by the shoes you liked on ebay.

Asics man. I wore pumas running shoes for a while and .... my ankles and shn splints were killing me. I came over some Asics in Dick's Sporting Goods, and wow they work wonders. I also hear some adidas are really good also. I was looking at running shoes that got ranked in Running magazine, and some high end expensive as hell Nike's were up there on the top. But you can get some asics or adidas for cheaper, and the asics i have are fantastic.

you probably want to start out with new balance. for any beginner (either for short or long distances), new balance not only embodies comfort and feather-weight but also gives the right traction.
nike & saucony are brands that i would definitely stay away from. most nike shoes may start and/or aggravate shin splints. saucony, on the other hands, tends to not have its shoe weight well-proportioned, and their gimmicks are over-hyped (ex. advanced coolant accessories).
as far as asics go, they're great for asphalt and rugged terrain but i wouldn't recommend wearing them indoors. however, they will require some time to break into.

I thought all shoes were the same until I went to a specialty shoe store (not name brand like foot locker), they looked at my foot and said because I was heavier build, flat footed and wide foot I should try a Mizuno Wave Renegade III, man the best pair of shoes ever, I feel like I'm wearing slippers, I actualy where them just to walk around the house, they are amazing!
