beginner training questions
Hey everyone. I have been a huge fan of bjj/mma for years now. I have always taken special interest in bjj and have told myself i am going to train once i get the time and money.
Well, that time is finally now. The problem is I am out of shape. I am not close to being "fat", just have real bad cardio. I have never really done sports so never had a solid training regiment.
I want to start eating a lot healthier, but honestly do not know exactly what i should eat. i find my self eating a lot more chicken breast, fruit salad, veggies. I am finding it really hard to cut carbs, but not even sure if i should be cutting carbs out if i am working out and being active. I am concerned if i just follow a "regular" diet i am not going to get the proper nutrition for training. If anyone knows where i can find a decent eating schedule to follow that would be awesome. If i have a set thing to follow i know i will, otherwise i find myself eating not so good.
I went to one trial bjj/mma class and i am so out of shape i could not finish the class. I loved it but was so embarrassed when i found my self puking and needed to sit out for a bit. i really want to get my cardio up before i actually start so i can keep up with everyone. What are some good work out routines for a beginner? I started to run nightly, and i have a punching bag.
I hope i can get in shape quickly so i can start. i am starting from square one totally but ready to be molded an will do exactly what im told to do. I hope the bjj school im about to join will have the patience with some one like me.
Any one else start of at square one with no athletic background?

Just have patience go in and work out with the bjj/mma class again. I was puking after the first 15 minutes of class during my first day. 2 months later and I haven't puked since, I've had much harder workouts since then as well.

I was in exactly the same situation. Thankfully i havn't puked up yet but i have come close on a couple of occasions at one point i think i almost blacked out! but 3 months down the line my cardio is 10 times better than it was when i first started.
Whats the cheesy quote? . . . ahhh yes " No Pain No Gain"

While the "no pain no gain" motto has some merit, there is a difference between being tough and being stupid. Know your limits and push them, however keep your goals small at first and you'll gain the confidence in yourself to shoot for the bigger ones in time.
So what if you puke, Everyone has at one point or another, if you keep it up, you'll be in the best shape of your life. I know I am now in the best shape I've been in since I was 12 years old. (11 years ago)

F2D.... You're cardio will improve quickly. Just keep at it! I am betting within the week you are able to "hang". If you really want to improve cardio, start swimming. Can't swim? Well running is the most basic, easiest form of cardio workouts.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advise. I think I am going to start the school in about week. I just bought a house so i need to put my attention on getting that all ready.
I am sure i will whip right into shape pretty quick. I just need to eat slightly healthier and ill be golden. I'm young (23) don't smoke or drink or anything so i just need to commit and it should be all good.

I'm where you are, and haven't gone to the classes ... partially because its difficult since I have young kids. I gotta get on that ... anyway ..
Going to the classes is the right thing to do. You will be in shape well before you get to be good at bjj, so might as well start working on your skills as soon as possible.

Jesus, I HATE this phrase, and any variation of it:
"I hope/plan/want to get in shape quickly!"
I would bet that 98% of people that say this end up injured, burned out, or depressed that they didn't meet their goals quickly enough. What's your hurry? MMA isn't going anywhere, and if you need to get in shape, you have plenty of time to do so, unless you have an inoperable tumor in your head or something...
You're out of shape, and it didn't happen overnight. You're not going to get back in shape overnight, either. But you will completely screw your chances of getting in great shape if you take a myopic short sighted view of your training. Start out at a moderate pace with any of your workouts, set reasonable goals, and learn as much as you can along the way from people who are reputable.
Don't be unrealistic, or you'll be on some other forum in a year or two posting a thread that starts out, "I am so frustrated because I can't stick to a program"....
Be smart. Good luck.

Oh no i totally get you. My goal is not to just get in shape as fast as i can, i know not to go insane with things just to get in shape.
I understand your concern or annoyance with it. I know it will take damn long time to really be where i want to be, to be on any level close to people who do this all the time. I just meant to give myself some pep talk saying it shouldnt take too long for at least my cardio to get a little better. but if it does, then i am also ready for that and fine with it.
