Balance
Wasn't sure where to put this, but it sort of fits conditioning, feel free to move it to a more appropriate place.....
Anyway, balance is key to any sport, but especially boxing. If your balance is off your blows don't land cleanly, you can be knocked down easier, your attacks are more predictable, etc, etc, etc....
Anybody have any drills that can be practiced to improve balance, please post it up and i will eagerly read them.
than ks!

Practice boxing under a qualified coach, jump rope, and do pistols. Of these three, the first is BY FAR the MOST important.

I have my fighters shadow box on a Bosu ball that's upside down. Performing punches, slips and ducking. If you can keep the ball relatively level your balance is good. Also, incorporating balance movements like side lunges to balance or step ups to balance will help as well.

Pistols are a good one. Others include training the movements that you feel are lacking in balance, exercising on uneven surfaces and using uneven loads.

I don't reccomend either. in fact I question the usefulness of shadow boxing on an inverted bosu ball as it applies to the ring. Though, it's better than those jackasses that do overhead squats on them and whatnot.

I've yet to see proof that working on unstable surfaces helps your balance while on stable surfaces.

Good point! I wonder if there is any scientific data on this? I would think that the only sure fire way to increase balance on a stable surface is just making sure you have zero muscular imbalance! Do unilateral movements, movements while on 1 leg, etc..

jumping rope for balance/coordination (and hey great cardio)
pistols
but my personal favorite: indo board!
it may not really make a difference for boxing, but its sure fun, and its something you can do while watching tv, on the phone, playing guitar hero, etc.

Alot of you guys a great athletes so balance training might seem like a waste of time but it's not. Here's an example: A couple of guys recommended doing pistols (great exercise), try doing pistols on a balance disc or bosu. What happens due to the shaky surface is you get more firing of your leg muscles, making them work harder, increasing the intenstiy and increasing your nervous system's communication with the brain. I guarantee that if you can do numerous pistols on a disc or bosu and you do them on a flat surface again, you'll rock out on the flat ground. This will translate into better manueverability in the ring and take down defense if you've one leg grabbed. LAte
