For Appearence or Performance?

For as long as i've worked out and conditioned every time i train with some dumbass wanna be meathead they either pause in their workout to see if they've gotten themselves bigger or make meaningless remarks about how strong they feel. They usually dont last long at the gym or in any pariticular combat sport. So i've got 2 questions

1. Do you train to get in better shape or is your main concern getting a good physique?

2. Would you rather have average strength and bodybuilder image, or an average image but be in the best shape of your life?

I'd rather be a Fedor than a Kimbo any day.

I do a little of both but I pride myself for being in the best shape of my life. But part of being in the best "shape" of my life is to also look good. So it goes hand in hand. But I do get what you are saying.

thats very simple for me
Performance always trumps Aesthetics IMO.

So I'd rather look average but have the best physical abilities.

They are not mutually exclusive.

Aesthetics mostly come along with good physical condition anyway, unless your a heavy-weight power lifter or something

I like to look good, but health is more important...but I have that Skinny frame (though I'm carrying a large suitcase on my belly at the moment), so when I'm in good shape I'm ripped anyway.

The two things are not mutually exclusive (as stated above) but I will say that when I was doing more pure weight training I "looked" perhaps more fit from the standpoint of musculature, symmetry, etc...than I do now training mostly MT and playing hockey, with little actual weight training.

I FEEL (and am) much more fit now though, and it gives me much more personal satisfaction.

exactly

the occasional example (fedor) doesnt mean that everybody has to be fat and soft looking to be functionally sound

I got a few to many nasty scars to worry about how I look. I train cause I love to train and love to improve myself.

I'm too ugly to worry about physique.

In all seriousness, I train for performance and the numbers. I love hitting PR's or breaking previous times in conditioning. I like to see improvement in strength, conditioning, form, technique, etc.

I'd rather look good because I'm not an athlete, though getting stronger does come with increase in muscle...
