Anyone train while wearing their gum shield?

I read this article on Rossboxing. It makes sense. I think I will heed his advice.

Train With Your Mouthpiece
By Ross Enamait - Published in 2004

This tip is directed to those combat athletes who compete while wearing a mouthpiece. I’ll get right to the point. If you fight with a mouthpiece, you need to train with your mouthpiece.

Consider the sport of boxing. You will always box while wearing a mouthpiece. Unfortunately, it is very rare to see a boxer hitting the bag while wearing his mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is only worn during sparring sessions. The sparring session therefore is used not only to develop sport-specific attributes (ex. combination punching), but it also takes on the task of familiarizing the fighter with his mouthpiece. This is a mistake.

When you constantly hit the bag without a mouthpiece, you get used to breathing through your mouth, rather than biting down on the mouthpiece (and breathing through the nose). Your breathing patterns are not “sport-specific” to what you will be doing inside the ring.

Whether you are hitting the mitts with your coach or hitting the heavy bag on your own, you should wear your mouthpiece.

As a youngster, I was taught to run with my mouthpiece. I learned to breathe through my nose during brisk roadwork sessions. A fighter who breathes through his mouth will be much more susceptible to a knockout. You need to bite down on the mouthpiece while fighting on the inside. A solid punch (or kick) to the chin will be devastating to the fighter whose mouth is wide open. Learn to breathe through the nose by training with your mouthpiece.

Yes, all the time. Jump roping, lifting weights, heavy bag, all the time... except while eating. ;)

Yeah... I've been working on developing an MMA specific weight lifting routine where you're in positions you'll be in in a match and doing movements you'll be doing in a match, so I wear it to make the whole thing more match like.

I'll be posting it when I'm comfortable that everything works well and is effective.

Some of my training partners ask why do I wear mine while doing super light grappling, I tell them, it a pain in the @ss but you really need to learn to breathe and not waste energy, I find you don't panic as much when you are going hard and you are tired and you have it on, its like second nature.

I dont know if I would wear in in front of everyone in a Muay thia session as it would be quite embarasssing, but I will definetly be wearing it when I go out running from now on.

Fuck them mate, wear it. They'll know why your wearing it and would take note

I've started back on my runs with the mouth piece in...its a double one so for a few sessions it'll be hard on the old lungs.

Funny thing is on pad work etc when I didn't wear a mouth guard I was strong and fit, when I started back the sparring with the mouth guard in, I was shagged pretty quickly (4 rounds). SO now I'm living out of the thing at training.

Train like you fight though I guess

I think the principle here applies to ever sport - don't use something for the first time when you compete.
