I've done a few. My longest was 800m swim (out and back in a lake at 7am), 20 mile bike and 5k run)

Hows your swim time? That's where most people struggle. Any lead you have in the swim can be taken away in the bike and run.

basically, train for what you'll need to do. If you can bike 10000 miles and no problem, focus on running or vice versa

im a triathlete. not your typical triathlete. i excel in joint rolling, couch chilling and video gaming. my times are pretty impressive. i would post them but you would probably be upset and lose all focus on your training.

I've done several duathlons:
3 mile run.
13 mile mountain bike course.
2 mile run.

I've never done an event with swimming.

My advice would be to work the ability to transition from one event to another.
Without fail, my calves would cramp up after the bike ride during the run (within in minutes), and I always encountered many people along the trail with with the same issues.

So don't break the training completely into:
run day
bike day
swim day

On some days do all three, or at least two, back to back.

I do several races a year. I choose to do sprints usually, but will be doing a half Ironman at the end of the year just to see if I can finish.
I have always been a competitive swimmer, so I am always in the top when I get out of the water, but I rarely train swimming. It's all technique, and unfortunately unless you learned it early, you're gonna have to go get a stroke coach and spend the time and money getting good and fast.
I suck at biking. It is routine for me to be out of the water in the top ten and then get passed by 50 athletes in a ten mile bike. I have the wrong kind of bike and not enough training. If you want to compete, get ready to spend 2,000 grand or more on a good tri-bike.
Running...well, the bike effects the run, i found this out the hardway with two years of racing with my seat 3" too high. hip pain, back frozen, even losing feeling in my penis. yowza!
After the small adjustment, I knocked three minutes off of my time.
Also, learn how to transition fast. Look an youtube, you'll find some good stuff.

I used to race a lot. Since I don't know anything about your fitness level in the 3 disciplines. Here is a basic training week.
Swim 3 days.
Bike 2 days a week.
Run (the most important part of tris) 3 days a week
After 1 ride, run 10 to 20 minutes (brick). This will teach your body to run after the bike.
Good Luck and have fun.
