Any benefits from training with a much larger partner?

I am just now starting some grappling training with my brother. It's nothing rediculously intensive, and I'm very much a noob at this point. However, my bro is 6'1'' 215lbs and I'm a mere 5'7'' 130lbs (soaking wet). I'm 20 and he's 24 btw.

He takes it real light on me because of our size difference, but I still get a helluva work out from him.

So, I'm wondering...if I would to continue training this way, what long term benefits could come of it? Is there a distinct advantage to training with bigger guys? Will it help me prepare against people my own size/weight?

thanks in advance

This probably belongs more in the grappling forum than here but to answer your question I definitely think there are benefits training with smaller and bigger opponents, not to forget opponents of your own size.

I weigh about 146lps and am 5'8. I train with guys that are between about 168-250 lps. I really like training with heavier opponents as you are forced to rely on technique rather than just power and strength - it's even tougher in a GI, than it is No GI I find. This may actually be a good thing for a beginner as it'll teach you not to base your grappling game on the physical but rather the technical. Ultimately though, I think it's good to train with people of various heights and weights as different body types create different dangers.

So keep training dude.

NOTE - At 130lps you may be sparring a lot more heavier guys, take it from me as I haven't sparred/rolled with someone my own weight or lighter in about 2 years - not since I did my last GI comp.

Only strengthwise. I think you already know the answer to this question. You need to work with people who would fight in your division to deal with the speed, size, and grappling of the sizes in the certain weight class. Most fighters I think prepare a fight with someone the size/physique of the person they are fighting.

Can't hurt to workout with all different weight classes; that's what an mma gym is for.

Now, if that person was made of iron then he/she could go for the submission but of course has to be careful with positioning simply due to the pain.
