"Aerobic training increases oxidative stress which can accelerate aging"

" Aerobic training increases oxidative stress which can accelerate aging.

According to Endocrinologist Dr. Diana Schwarzbein (author of The Schwarzbein Principle II ,) “oxidation” is a process that forms free radicals in the body. Normally the body can neutralize free radicals with substances known as antioxidants. It is only when there is an excessive build-up of free radicals that the body cannot neutralize all of the free radicals. This leads to changes to your ****bolism which can accelerate aging. "

Wow, I really don't know what to say about this. It is very counter intuitive.

Thoughts?

Hell, tell it to my parents (60's) who both look 100% better after about a year of proper diet and exercise.

Probably comes from the same camp who say we have a pre-determined number of heart beats in a lifetime, therefore training will kill us as we use too many beats...

The wording is kind of hard to understand, but it seems to say that eating anti-oxidants counters the free radicals (which is obvious), but the next sentence is kind of ambigious to me.

But I agree, if you workout hard and don't eat any fruits or vegtables (only acidic food), you'll age faster. Problably why so many runners look so gaunt at older ages and why many atheltes start to really look old once they hit 40.

Another thing, it's important to take a crap regularly because when food is rotting in your stomach, it sucks up your anti-oxidants or releases more free radicals in your system- one of the two.

This is somewhat relevant: The two articles that it cites are from 94 and 97 and the Schwarzbein book is about 6 years old. Research at the cutting edge of physiology especially exercise physiology changes so quickly, so without even reading it I'm going to say it's outdated.

You forgot to mention that its "excessive aerobic workout", the title topic is kind of misleading

I agree. Much of the research lately has pointed towards the difference in how the body responds to exercise-induced oxidative stress versus diet and chemical induced oxidative stress.
