? about distance running/HIIT

im trying to get in better shape for boxing.

does long distance running have any use at all, or would I be better off just using that day as an extra rest day?

also, if i did tabata sprints today on a track, can I do them tomorow on an eliptical or would that be over training?

THANKS IN ADVANCE
