2 Mile Run

What's up gents? Quick background...I'm 26, and have lived a very sedintery lifestyle since I graduated college and entered corporate America. In college I weighed around 200 pounds, and I was in sick shape.

In May, I decided to recoomit to fitness and go balls out. I just hit the 2 month mark in my routine. It may help to know that I'm 5"9 & 220 pounds.

I'm at the gym yesterday, and I figured I wanted to do a progress test to see where I'm at in my new routine. I have always thought that your 2 mile time is a good measure of overall fitness so I ran it. I did it in 16:51 so I just clipped 17.

I'm curious to see where some of you guys are at in your 2 mile if you run it. My goald is to be able to run it in 14 minutes. Thanks!

I do a 6 minute mile 14 minute 2 mile or 25 minute 3 mile or 7 miles in 70 minutes. Those are my usual times or so. I have been running for about 2 months. 5'10, 165 lbs, 21 years old. My longer term goal for running is 18 minutes for 3 miles. I expect it will take me a long time.

I don't know what a good time is for people, but these times reflect major progress for me. Good luck with your goals and congrats on deciding to get fit again!

By the way, if you're able to get down to a 6min pace for several miles you're a pretty damn good runner-but not near competitive status. Think about it like this, for pretty much all military Spec Ops units when it comes to run time they want you to be able to keep a 7min mile pace minimum for up to 6 miles. Personally I think that any person barring some kind of existing injuries or medical conditions can run a 7 min mile.

Treadmills are very inaccurate, go time yourself on a track to get a real idea of where you are at

LOL

A few years ago I would have thought the exact same thing, but spending more time around non athletic people has made me agree

Over 22 years old, unless they train in something, 95% of the public couldn't do a 7 min mile, which is weak IMO.

I was doing 2.5 in at my best 14 min 10, but that was *sigh* a few years ago and I had a decent fitness back ground before I started running up to that point

I just started working out for the summer 3 weeks ago. Right now I do 1 mile in 7:20 and 2 miles in 15:30. I have a ways to go to get my time back under 13 mins for the 2 mile again. I'm obviously not in running shape yet.

When I was in the Army and running a lot, I found the best way to increase my scores in the 2 mile were to do sprints. I'd sprint a lap around the track trying for around 1:20 or less. Wait 1 minute then run the next lap trying for the same time. I'd keep doing it for 6 to 8 laps. Eventually, 1minute of rest was plenty and I could usually keep all my laps around 1:20-1:25. It gave me better times through conditioning and by getting my legs used to running at a faster pace.
