For Xmas
I'm going to ask my parents to get me a kettlebell
If I'm going to have just ONE kettlebell for all of my functional-training purposes, what weight should it be? I consider myself of average strength. 5'9", 170lbs. What do y'all think?

Get an adjustable/loadable one.

Then you're an idiot.
Get a barbell and 300lbs of weights.

Let's just calm down. I live on a military base, with olympic sets and power racks across the street from my dorm. That's already covered.
I would, however, like to have one kettlebell, because no gym I've ever been to has had one.

Don't care, if you think kettlebells, particularly one kettlebell, will cover "all of my functional-training purposes", youu don't know what you're talking about. If you're going to use kettlebells as an additional resistance tool then that's fine, but don't go thinking that it's somehow a better tool than any other tool.
16kg seems to be pretty popular for higher rep swings and snatch stuff, but it's hard to say without knowing how you're going to use it, or what your lifting ability is.

Dude, relax. You don't have to be so disrepectful. I DO know what I'm talking about. I'm not praising the kettlebell as a "magic bullet" for training; I do a lot of CF-esque training, and a good portion of it calls for kettlebells. I plan on using one to supplement my training, not replace it.
KB complexes, TGUs, snatches, swings, etc...I plan on incorporating a lot of it.

That's a really solid reason to want one.
But seriously, an loadable one is your best bet.
