Wearing rings...

I apologize profusely if this question has already answered elsewhere, but i searched and turned up bupkis.

I just go married over the weekend, and the wife wants me to wear the ring 24-7-365. Is there any risk of my smashing this thing flat when I lift? I REALLY do not want to pay to get it fixed or replaced.

It's not a good idea. You will probably end up either deforming the ring or scratching it if you lift with it on. Try your wife on the idea of wearing in around your neck on a chain or something like that.

I actually had to ask this as well. Don't wear it. Do a deadlift with it, and you'll understand. You'll also be scratching it to hell. It is not practical.

I'd imagine it could get pretty scratched up depending on how sharp the knurling is on your barbell. Getting smashed flat, I dunno. I wouldn't wear it if it was me, but I have no pratical experience with it.

First, congrats on the new ball and chain.

Second, What bigjohn said. You might scratch it and also it will often cut into you if have a super tight grip. (i.e heavy deadlifts)

Oh, damn. That is a good question.

When I first started lifting, I wore my wedding ring. Pressure from the bar caused the ring to dig into my finger, which hurt and probably compromised my grip. Plus, it probably would have eventually scratched up the ring like crazy.

(pauses to imagine Oly bar glittering due to fine sprinkling of gold particles on the knurling)

How 'bout you suggest to the wife that you buy a nice gold chain (she can help you pick it out) and put the ring on that when you lift. You can tuck the chin inside your shirt, so the ring is close to your heart.

Also, if needed -- Google up stories about diligent husbands who wore their wedding rings to work, got them snagged on machinery and were pulled into brush chippers, etc. Phrase to use -- "it's the same way at the gym."

Hehe. I like the scare tactic.

my dad plays old man rec basketball

recently, someone was playing with them and got his ring caught on the net going for a layup or a block - dont remember which and i wasn't there

moral of the story: the ring got caught and the dude came down. the ring peeled his finger almost completely and broke it in 2 places. someone had to climb up on a ladder and get the bloody ring that still had skin hanging on it.

point being - it's not worth the risk. no nets in lifting but something like tha could probably happen
