Trouble with deadlifts

Hi.
Just started doing deadlifts (never done 'em before), got some tips from a mate. Feels good but when I do it I have a hard time getting the bar above my knees, from there it's no problem. I do full squats and have a wide stance, I think I have the techniques okay (for a beginner) but it is just up to the knees it's hard.
Any help would be good, thanks!

I think I'm doing that but I'll make extra sure next time and we'll see how it goes.
Thanks!

It's supposed to be hard. If you can't maintain good form, then use less weight.

My biggest trouble when I first started was that I was squatting the weight. Like others have said pull back not up.

Your shins feel it when you're pulling back, that's for sure! My shins are all bruised.

For me at least, when I was squating it the bar was farther away from my legs, when I pull back the bar is closer to, if not completely touching my legs cause you actually lean back a little.
