Sumo

I was watching TV yesterday and a sumo (hatsu bashu) show turned up. I watched a couple fights and many of those ended with one wrestler lifted the other one out of the ring and they all are about 400lbs or more -this strongly reminded me of a deadlift but with a struggling weight.

Do anyone know how much a top 10 sumo wrestler can lift, and/or if there are any top lifters with sumo background?

From what I remember from an article on Sumo several years back,at that time they didn't mention anything about lifting weights as we would know it,benchs etc. They did a lot of no weight squats(although when you are 400lb I guess that is different again). They did a lot of reistance training using each other,ie the pushing and pulling that you see in the ring, ate shitloads of rice and a high calorie stew and used a teppo(?) to practice their slaps on.But when you are pushing people around that is pretty good resistance training too....

Most of the time when one sumo lifts another he is using some very good technique.

They usually get a deep grip on the mawashi(sp?) and pull the other guy in really tight to them and then quarter squat the guy up the few inches it takes before walking him out of the ring.

Strength is a big issue but the technique is atleast half the battle.

My friends went to see Sumo the other day at the local castle.

I booked tickets to the next Bushido instead.

Yeah, most sumo wrestlers don't lift barbells. They squat each other, and train the shit out of each other. Five or ten guys will line up, and the ranking guy has to push them all out one after another.
