MMA @ College
I met someone in my literature class who does BJJ. He was asking me a bunch of questions about the way I train for strongman and strength in general, and wanted to get back into weight training because he hadn't done it for a while. So I agreed to have him train with me at the campus weight room if he'd show me some jujitsu because I only have very minimal MMA experience from when I was in the Army. We did a pretty good push workout (bench press, one-arm dumbbell clean and press, and weighted dip), then went downstairs to the basketball court in the basement of the gym. My friend said he already used the mats they have down there for some grappling in the past, so we asked one of the guys who works there if we could use the mats. He said we could use them until the game starts. My friend then starts showing me some very basic techniques and whatnot, until this other douchebag who works there arrived and told us we can't do that there. We say "Fuck it", and continue to do the grappling after he leaves. He comes back, sees us doing the same thing, and now he's a little pissed off. He ends up telling us that we need to get permission from such-and-such person/department, so we take our shit and head over there. We get jerked around by a couple of people, but finally get some information. Basically, we're going to try to start a martial arts club if one doesn't already exist. He's going to call someone tomorrow and we'll see how it goes. Damn, this post is long.

Bummer.
I go to CU and we have a Muay Thai and a BJJ class.
They are both really basic, the MT class is below my experience level, but it's cool to be able to take BJJ at my school.
But dude, you live in NY. Why don'tyou go to like Renzo Gracie's Gym or the Serra Gym?

Yeah... I'm dizzy now but it's a cool idea. Hope it gets put into use. Or at the very least, allow you to use the mats without getting pissy over it.

Yeah, my friend said he'll probably tell them that it will be a self-defense club instead of BJJ/MMA/grappling, so they won't bitch about it being dangerous or some crap like that.

I tried to start up two clubs at my college (a classic film club and a grappling club) but unfortunately there wasn't enough interest in the film club and I couldn't find a teacher to sponsor the grappling club but more power to you. It will probably take a lot of work as you'll need to find a sponsor, draw up a charter, assign positions, create and submit a budget, schedule meetings, attend SGA meetings and so on but your school may be different so I hope you succeed.
Good luck.

I have experiance with trying to start a martial arts club in college.
My first one failed. We were eventually able to establish one, but they gave us so much red tape. Its cuz their afraid we might hurt our selves. The club finnally disintegrated
The second club went a lot better because he got a professor as an advisor. He's a judo guy so he was all for it.
I noticed that the wrestling club has no trouble with their club. Its probably cuz wrestling doesn't have the same stigma as MMA. It might be easier just to name your club 'wrestling club' so you go through less barriers. OR maybe just train at your colleges wrestling club if yours has one.
