Some advice about Kettlebells

I am coming off a pretty serious shoulder injury that has kept me from doing any workout of any kind for about 6 months now. No BJJ, no lifting weights, even anything more than a brisk walk would hurt.

Neadless to say I have put on quite a bit of weight. However my shoulder has been getting better and better and now most of the pain I have is from the extra weight and the fact I haven't been working out, rather than the injury its self so I am looking to get back into things.

Now, I have heard some amazing things about kettlebells and the results you are able to get from them so I am looking to try them.

I just have a few questions for anyone with experience with them.

1. Should I go adjustable or buy a set of different weights? I am currently lending towards the adjustable ones, but this is something I am opening to discussing. Mostly I am worried about buying the wrong sized weight and not being able to workout properly because its too light or too heavy. Like I said with my shoulder I am going to be starting slow but if the strength returns like my doctor tells me it will, I will probably outgrow a lighter weight quicker.

2. Are the results people have claimed normal? How will this help my BJJ which I am also going to be starting up again soon.

3. Price. What would i be looking at paying for a GOOD set? I have been prices all over the place.

4. Brand name. Who are some of the top dogs out there when it comes to kettlebells?

5. Is there anything else I should know before I get started with them.

Thanks in advance for any information guys.

There's not much that kettlebells do for you that you can't do with regular weights, especially when you factor in the exhorbitant cost. You can make simple ones with a bike lock and some weights.

Buy an adjustable set.

Kettlebells are great. But so are dumbells and barbells. Don't necessarily believe what you read in articles by authors who sell kettlebells on their website.

3. Price. What would i be looking at paying for a GOOD set? I have been prices all over the place.

The cheapest, or at least something near the bottom price range whatever that is.

4. Brand name. Who are some of the top dogs out there when it comes to kettlebells?

I don't think brand name is important.

5. Is there anything else I should know before I get started with them.

A good information page on kettlebell stuff is found here: Kettlebell Training for Size, Strength, Fat Loss and Conditioning - Mahler's Aggressive Strength. But before you go off buying kettlebells, you should think about whether there will do anything magical to you as compared to bumbells or barbells. If you are interested in grappling, maybe a set of dumbells and a sandbag would be even better.
