I say go with grippers. They are portable and fun. You can keep them in your desk at work. Also, changing the ISG (to warm up, and then some medium reps and finally a few singles followed by negatives) is as fun as training with one bar at the gym (even worse). The springs are hard to change and it gets tiring. You can modify the grippers to make them easier or harder for inbetweens. I would only get the ISG as a tool for negatives and just another gripper in my arsenal after I have many other grippers. I don't think the ISG is a gripper arsenel on its own.

Next time you go out to eat or to a bar remember that every 20 you drop could be a gripper that you own. When I dropped like 100 bucks on grippers over two years ago I had to stay in two weekends to make up the money. It was worth it because I still use those grippers and will for years to come. If I don't want them, I can easily sell them for 1/2 price. IMO, grippers are a good investment.

Just cuz you have the wrist strength of a 12 year old girl doesn't mean you can just bitch and moan.

When you get to my level, we can dance little boy. Until then, bow down and admit your inferiority.

Whats a good one to start with? It says the 150(intermediate) is good for beginning males. Would 200 be too much?

D oyou mean heavygrips? If so, the 150 I found to be pretty easy and I'd never done any grip training before. Mind you if you file it and fit a hose clamp its not so bad. If you've never done any grip work I'd probably buy a 150 and 200 if you can afford it, but then I'd go for the far superior quality of the Ironmind CoCs.

I do light ISG work throughout the day (a 90 lb setting for sets of five grease the groove style, ESP right as I wake up), and my cut, clamped gripper feels much easier now, I can close it almost every time I pick it up with my right hand. It's nice not to have my grip feel weak for a couple days from a the heavy sessions I used to do. Once a week I'll pick up a heavy gripper and play with it, but that's about it.

BTW, I said 90 lbs, but I can close a super master (like a 2.3-2.4) and can only max 120 on the ISG.

It may also be more specific towards things you actually need crushing grip for, the elongated handles and smaller angle more closely resembles pliers or dykes... but most people who get into grip training aren't doing it to better grip things with a pair of channel locks, so I'd say this trait is negligable.

edit- also if I could figure out how to take off a spring or two (mine has three) I might be able to use it for training 2-3 fingers at a time.

Also, as far as problems with the handle, it's smooth, and so as it get sweaty it needs to be toweled off, and as it gets oily, you'll have to wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol or something. additionally there's some sideways play in it, so as youg grip down it's going to drift to the side a bit. But really so far I think the ISG is underrated. Certainly get some grippers if you don't have some (cause they're a standard by which you can compare yourself to others) but the ISG is a very usefull grip tool. However if you can afford it, get the devil's advocate, it's probably even better.
Captains of Crush are pretty awesome! I can close #1 13 times with my right & 2 times with my left. I am soon to buy a 2 & 3.

Get a hose clamp and put it around the springs, once you can close that then get the #2.

How is it too light if you can't even close it all the way?

Get the #2 and #3 anyways.

i was buying some new trainers the othyer day and noticed the sports shop was selling grippers with three different strengths, the one marked 'hard' had a spring that can't have been more than 3mm across. One of the guys working there came up to me to ask what was wrong when I started laughing.
