Slightly OT: arrogant friends and crap strength training routines
Whatsup guys? Anyone here have any friends who think they know everything about strength training, yet they know nothing? One of my good friends is a HS baseball player, and his parent's are always talking about how unbelievably good he is, etc...so he has a very arrogant attitude about his skills. Well, his parent's always push him super hard to be the best, and basically the Dad runs his HS basball career. So they read an article in the news paper about a HS baseball player who turns pro and signs a deal with a big signing bonus. Well, the Dad calls the coach and talks, and get's his workout program. The program is sh*t! Example:
Chest/shoulder/triceps day: 22 sets of 10 reps of bench press, only shoulder work is lateral raises, tricep pushdowns.
Back/Bi day: 50 pullups (good right), 5x10 lat pulldowns (whoah), 3x10 db rows (ok), 2x60 sumo deadlifts (wtf???)
Leg day: Sissy squats in sissy squat machine: 10,8,6,4 (he wonders why his squat is weak), 3x25 leg press, 3x10 leg extensions, 3x10 leg curls, 3x15 stepups.
Everyday: 100 crunches
Now, he is always talking about his great workout program, and how he is gaining all of this size and strength (he's a weak and skinny sob)...and I tell, "Hey man, you might want to look into some good oly lifting or PL programs"...and he's like "Nah, this is a baseball specific program!"...then I think, no this is a useless routine mean't to gain size and strength, but you can be so much more effective with a solid PL or Oly program. I just have gotten so tired of all of the HS athletic stuff...most of the S&C routines suck, and it builds arrogant athletes. Ugh. Anyone else have any know it all friends like that?

Dude, you are going to run into that a lot. I hear the dumbest conversations in the dorms about MMA or training all the time. Granted none of them know what I do or how I do it. But I learned about five years ago to quit kicking dead horses with fitness. it tok me ten years to get my mom and dad on fish oil lol. But one step at a time hahaha.

Yeah my roomate is the same, telling me that my workouts suck that I should do what he does (typical stuff)
Sucks because he's more muscular than me since he's been lifting for 7 years and i've been lifting for 6 months

22 sets of 10? What does he use, the bar? It's not like baseball needs constant force; it's an explosive movement to bat or to throw.
Last year I lived with some of the strongest guys I've ever known. One could squat and deadlift over 600 and bench around 350. The other isn't as strong, but he's pushing 300 lb now and recently squatted 500 and benched 225 18 times after his chest workout. Strong guys. Anyway, they're both unfortunately in love with bicep curls. The second guy lives with two other football players (he's the smallest at around 280), and they keep a bunch of 40-50 lb dumbbells in their living room and do curls before going out to bars to get their swell on. Once I was there and started doing one hand OHP and they yelled and me and said they were only for curls. Of course, I used to have a day just for arms, and ditched the squat in favour of leg press, so we've all had our days.
Then there's my dad who goes by his "More reps with less weight" philosophy and has been doing the same weight on a few machines for years. I think he genuinely fears for my back when he sees me squat.

Yeah, I find it better to keep to myself about my gym stuff now at least with family. Occassionally I hollar into a platonic cave and try to coax somebody out, but I don't have the patience for anything more than that any more. People are stubborn, I find it best to lead by example and let the chips fall where they may.
Ghandi said "be the change you want to see in the world" I think that's a good place to start.

I work in my college intercollegiate weight room. They do some good stuff (alotta cleans), but there is too much machine work. Doing machien laterial raises instead of regular ones. A hammer row machine, leg curl machine, ect.
I'm 125 lbs (i know, I don't eat enough) and naturally big people are always telling me what to do about it. Telling me I should only stick to upper body routines, eat junk food all the times, weird curl techniques ( like going only half way up for 10 reps, then going only half way down for 10 reps, then holding it int the middle for 10 seconds, then doing some full reps), ect.
