Skateboard shoes as lifting shoes?

An old guy at the gym (ex OLY lifter) swears by them. Good idea?

Quote:
What do skateboarding shoes look like? Well, they should have a thick, flat sole, important so a skater can feel the board beneath his or her feet. They should have an oversized tongue, which helps protect the foot from injury. Other than that, anything goes.

I've recommended them before - just be sure that you're getting a flat sole and you should be fine.

They look good to me. The important thing is flat and short.

It's not flat sole that matters (check weightlifting shoes), it's sole compressibility. Sole should be hard, not compressable. Compression = loss of power.

Skate shows are great in my books

I lift in a 5 year old pair off duffs, when i forget and lift in my asics it feels like i'm lifting on a ball of jell-o.

Carnal suggests toe-shoes, Fatty rocks the chuck t's and I roll barefoot.....but I'm a weak little girl with pigtails, so I'd go with toe-shoes, chucks or skate shoes with the insoles removed.

I've been told that barefoot is ideal, and that those canvas hightop chuck taylors are almost as good. the skateboard shoes look like low-cut chucks

Actually, a combination of both - you don't want a rise in the heel to push you forward and put more stress on your knees/more focus on your quads.

However, your point is well taken - most skate shoes are hard, but there are exceptions, so be sure to pick a hard, flat soled skate shoe.
