Why not just grab an olympic bar? Nevertheless, cheating slightly on shrugs is ok. It's a very limited range of motion difficult to target. So as long as you're destroying them, it's ok, just don't apply the method to other exercises.

If your doing deadlifts and/or powercleans do you really need them? Mine got big from doing powercleans mostly and i can't imagine doing both.

I have done shrugs on the smith machine, I dont prfer it but it is good just for variety, or if what i usually use is taken but for grip i dont find holding 180lbs free weight barbell any different than 180lbs in the smith machine or for dumbells for that fact. I think it is just a preference difference.

Most gyms don't have dumbells heavier than 120. I can't imagine this being enough weight to shrug for someone who's been training a while. By shrugging in the smith machine, I leave the squat rack and the power rack open for real lifters. The lack of roll makes a difference, but not a big one.
