Quite simply, we are all made up of the same parts, but they are constructed and put together very differently, which will of course have ompact on leverages and strenght.

Power lifters, like most in this forum- tend to be heavier than most.

For instance, a 185lb powerlifter might look smaller than a 185 bodybuilder; yet the powerlifter is almost always stronger..Powerlifters tend to build dense muscle tissue, therefore a smaller muscle will weigh more. This is the basic explanation.

Powerlifting is a more complete way to ensure muscular hypertrophy. Bodybuilders tend to have great definition, yet walk around with some intramuscular adipose tissue.

Explosive exersises and heavy weights ensure that the body gets more than just a pump from the gym, thus deep intramuscular fibers get a thorough lashing.

Don't forget the bones. There are guys with huge frames. Even if they have no muscle OR fat on them, they still weigh a tonne.

I think oly lifters exemplify this even more. Guys like Dimas and the like don't look that heavy, but they are very dense. They usually don't have large arms like a bodybuilder, but their major muscles groups and core and very heavily muscled.

Magicman: I have only recently become acquainted with all things MMA, exclusively through watching UFC videos. Having started watching about 3 months ago I have since seen about 30 or so. I guess of the top of my head Sean Shirk (sp presumably) looks much more muscular than some of his opponents. Actually BJ Penn and Matt Hughes is a good example.

Younggunz: Thank you for mentioning the difference from exercise, I would always elect for strength over looks, yet was not aware of the distinction. I will certainly look into the points you have raised.

And as others have said bone structure may have a lot to do with weight, I think Im much heavier than I look and no one ever really expects my to way as much as I do.

As many have mentioned before, much of it has to do with body fat composition as well as a person's natural skeletel frame. Some people have bricks for bones, others have carbon fiber. (Terrible analogy, but you get the point)

Sherk and Hughes cut a significant amount of weight to make their weight classes. BJ, well, he could weigh in with an xbox and make 170.

Sherk's only 5'6 or so and his opponents are usually taller. So he's packing the same amount of weight as them on a smaller frame. Hughes cuts weight to get down to 170. I'm betting Penn doesn't have to cut alot of weight to make 170. If you saw BJ at 155 he'd look more like the other fighers, instead of when he fought up in weight classes.
