Use it anything where you want a firm grip on the bar and think that sweating may hinder your grip (cleans, snatches, BORs, heavy benching, overhead presses, etc, etc) I've even seen some lifters chalk their back when squating and some Oly lifters chalk their collar bones to help the bar grip on the catch for cleans.

Go to your local camping/outdoor sports shop, they sell it for rockclimbing, it's the same stuff.
