Power Training vs Strength Training + Striking Practice

Do you guys do separate training for power, ie punching/kicking with weights?

I do regular strength training and practice striking separately without weights, which I think accomplishes the same basic goal with less risk for injury.

What do you think?

I also do cardio and flexibility training.

punching/kicking with weights is a fucking awful idea - it causes joint damage, teaches incorrect technique, resists in a different direction to the way the strike is thrown and it makes you look like a tool.

Train for strength by lifting weights, train for power by lifting weights fast.

I sometimes shadow box with 1-2 lbs weights in my hands. I don't do it for strength, I do it for muscle endurance. It works very, very well too.

Try going through a Bas Rutten workout with 2 lbs pink dumbells in your hands. Just don't expect to throw punches harder afterwards.

Punching with weigths is like Alan said only good for endurance, and the weights have to be light. Some weight training does have a good carry over for for striking, working a strong core can help, but you want to strike harder, work on striking.
