Possible to lift heavy 3 days in a row ?

Is there any benefit to lifting heavy weights three (3) days in a row ?

I hear people discussing overtraining, but I'm not so sure. Maybe the human body is capable of more than we think it is. When I read the training journals of Powerlifters I often find them lifting heavy 3 days on followed by one or two days rest and then back to lifting heavy weights again.

I have also read about inmates within the prison system. About how they lift heavy just about everyday and do bodyweight exercises by the hundereds. They quickly develop well muscled and powerful figures and do so without the best nutrician. Just vigorous training on a daily basis. Has the threat of overtraining held us back from amybe doing that little bit more ?

Give it a shot. If it works for you, more power to ya. If you burn out in 3 weeks, you'll have learned what your body isn't capable of. The general consensus, though, seems to be that most people can't do this. I personally know I'm not even able to lift heavy 3 days in a week, much less 3 days in a row.

If you want to know more about prison workouts there was a Tnation article on this posted a while back

I'd say it depends a lot on the lifts and the volume.

I've done a heavy squat workout, pull workout and push workout on consecutive days. But with my schedule, I was doing about 30 minutes of lifting per session.

The only way you're gonna know for sure is to try it out.

I agree with the above. I think if you kept it to one heavy exercise and then just lighter assistance work it could be doable depending on your personal recovery abilities.

My experience is much like Trin's. I have a really hard time lifting heavy more than twice a week. I've tried it and I burned out pretty fast. Looking back on it I didn't eat enough and my sleep was kind of lacking. So, maybe I might be able to do it if I did a lot of other things right. However, I think it's better to take it slower since I'm new and maybe when I'm stronger add in some more heavy days.

Be careful if you do try it. Don't push too hard since it's a lot easier to injure yourself when you're fatigued. Listen to and obey your body's wishes .

Adjust your volume and intensity accordingly and you can lift every day if you like. You can never judge by what someone else is doing cause there are too many factors involved

It's not impossible, and I do it regularly enough, but I found you do have to tweak your programme slightly, for example I no longer paired chest with tris, and worked chest as a single group on day one, but then wouldn't hit tri's until day 4 to allow for proper muscle recovery (vice versa applies to starting with triceps and making chest day 3 or 4, also the same applies to back and biceps).

I can only reitterate what everyone else has said, experiment with it, and above all eat often and well and get 8 hours rest.
