ouch... my back

So yesterday I lifted and all I did was BOR's, Chins, and Face pulls. Nothing to strenuous. About halfway through my chins though I went for a drink at the water fountain and noticed that when I breathed in deeply my middle/left back hurt pretty bad. I hoped it would get better over time, but it is now evening of the next day and my mid/left back, up to my neck, hurts, especially when I turn my torso certain ways(especially when I turn to the left). Anyways, I have a 2nd degree BB test in TKD on thursday so I am going to take tomorrow off, then do my test the best I can, then take a couple days break and see how it goes. Any ideas of what I could have done? Is it just likely a pulled/irritated muscle?

Sorry to hear that. You could have just over strained your intercostal muscles - the ones that expand your ribs when you inhale. I had an episode years ago that felt like I was having a heart attack but the hospital said it was just an inflammation of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles from working out. They say if you learn to breath with your belly, you can avoid all that because you won't use your intercostal muscles to breathe anymore, but I haven't tried it.

Yeah I suck at breathing with my belly so I definitely need to work on that.

Or you could take a year off of lifting and disappear from Sherdog.

A good chiropractor can often help with symptoms like that.

But you don't want somebody who's going to wrench your spine around even when you have messed up discs like what happened to Matt Serra.

It's easy. Lie down on ya belly, don't move your chest (it shows when you do) and do move your belly (get a spotter if you can't feel it). Once learned stays with you forever.
