Newbie questions on jargon

I've read the FAQ but I'm still not clear on some things.

When I read a training regimen and it says:

Squats 5x5
BP 5x5
somthing esle 5x 4-6

Does 5x5 mean 5 reps of the max weight you can handle followed by 5 more?

And if so 5x 4-6? If it is the max weight you can handle, then how would you make it to 6 on your 2nd set?

Also, is it completly hopless to train on those shitty plastic sand filled things?(I'm poor and don't have much spare room)

Forgive me if these questions are moronic.

TIA

5x5 = 5 sets of 5 reps

Maybe he means dumbbells that are plastic and filled with sand?

I seem to recall running into those things back in the mid 90s.

Any training is better than no training.

obviously i dont think anyone can do there 5 rep max for 5 sets...i'm not the smartest person but i think a good rule of thumb (taken from bill starr) would be to do 90% of your 5 rep max for 5 sets or pyramid to 95% of your 5 rep max over 5 sets.

and as long as you have enough weight, i dont think it really matters what your weights are made of or look like. (although having an olympic weight set is much more bad ass)

If you're talking about sand filled plates then, yes, they are fine. As said in that famous Henry Rollins quote, "Two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds".

As for the 5x5 question, 5x5 means there are five sets each made up of five reps. I'm not too familiar with Bill Starr's programs, so I'm not sure if it's a straight weight the whole way through or is ramped on each set. Be sure you look into that.

Thanks guys,

I've been scouring the forum, but that one thing has eluded me.

And yes, I did mean those plastic plates filled with sand.

But thanks for making me feel like a total dick, Alan.
