Hello all. I just wanted to introduce myself on the board. I'd love to put in my two cents while i can but till then i will have to learn like a good little noob as i feel though my training is effective i still have a ways to go.

I am a bigger guy who is looking to cut down and i believe that i will be stronger then most if i can drop weight. I am also working on gaining a little more functional and explosive strength in the meantime.

Heavy bag work will be the norm for the next while as i want to get into the sport and get my feet wet and get my conditioning back.

Here are my personal bests.

Weight - 260
Squat - 405 X 8 no belt(haven't maxed in sometime)
Deadlift - 565
Bench - 295 X 5

Any bag routines you can quickly give me that will help translate my strength into functional speed and power?

Don't worry i will search the boards but if you can give me a quick 2 cents it would be much appreciate it a ton.

Regards.

Sebastian

The Standup forum has some good bag routine. Also for dropping weight read the stickies in the Conditioning and Diet & Supp forums.

Being that you actually do deadlifts and squats you probably already have a decent routine but check out the stickies in this forum as well as they are pretty damn comprehensive.

I am thinking my weaknesses right now are: roational abwork, weak VMO, and anaerobic capacity and recovery time(traditionally a strength for me but now i'll just have to accept it as weak because my standard for this is high)

Bas Rutten's MMA CD's will quickly kick your ass, but to learn to box and develop real striking power and abilities (now listen carefully) YOU NEED TO TAKE CLASSES OR GET LESSONS. This is the MOST important thing you can do for your striking. until then you're just another meathead with a heavy bag in his garage. As a meathead with a heavybag in his garage, I feel justified in this assertion.

Did you mean VO2 Max?

Anyway, Clint07 and Urban both hit it. There are some decent bag routines in the Stand Up forum but also like Urban said... You need to be taught how to correctly strike. Join a gym and take some classes... the classes alone will get you started with many of the physical goals you want. Punching the bag with no skills will develop a lot of bad habits (which will be harder to break later on) and maybe even some sore wrists.

Vastus medialis, I believe, teardrop shaped inner head of the quad muscle.

Threadstarter - If you want to hit the heavy bag take lessons, get the Bas Rutten cds, and most importantly get yourself some handwraps and learn to use them, otherwise you run the risk of fucking up your wrists and hands.
