OK, I read the stickied stuff and have been working out for a couple of years.
Some of you claim that the pump is not necessary or important in gauging work-out effectiveness, but I care to disagree.
Whether for power or aesthetics or a blend of both , I think the only way to properly train is to train for the pump and feel the blood rushing in the muscle.
I think if you do any exercise properly, and don't have eloctrolytic imbalances, everyone gets a pump.
I get a pump doing one rep of most exercise most of the time .. I have to feel the pump to know I'm working out -- if you aren't getting feedback, then what's the point ?
I eat a kilo of bananas and drink a liter of milk everyday, so my potassium and calcium levels are high.
When on the rare occasions I do not get a pump, I feel my workout isn't as valuable as it should have been.
Of courese the muscle pump is more common with higher reps, but doesn't it feel good and having some kind of feedback just enhance your training ?
If that's what you use to judge progress then that's fine, but I'd rather go by something measurable, like how much weight I can lift compared to how much I used to be able to.

I like the pump. it feels good, and helps me stay motivated to keep working out
Great. personally, for me, the pump is a side effect and has nothing to do with my assessment of the workout. My progress keeps me motivated to workout and lets me know I'm exercising. But whatever makes you happy man.
Studies show, however, that striving for the pump is probably masturbatory and of little significance for strength training. But whatever makes you happy man.
