How do you incorporate periodization into your training?

Do you use it to prepare for fights or competitions? Do you go through periods where you focus on grappling and other periods where you focus more striking? Or periods where you focus more on cardio, and others on strength? How so?

I've been finding that I can't maxmize my progress with strength at the same time as cardio. I feel that I have to maintain one while I spend more time on the other. Is this the way it works for you guys?

I think once you hit a certain level of training you'll need to do some of that, but I don't think most people are at that stage. If you are, good for you.

Periodization can mean many different things. There are some links in the FAQ, if you haven't read them, that'd be a good start.

I think your experience is common. Not everyone cares about skill training or cardio...so some of these responses might reflect that attitude.

It makes sense to cycle your priorities. Check the training logs and you'll eventually find guys training to fight, training to get stronger AND have good cardio etc...

Just don't check mine - I just hurt my back in a big way and my log is filled with failure and desperation only.

In all honesty, I generally focus on strength and am normally pretty lax on my cardio unless I've got something coming up that requires it. I had been getting decent cardio just from rolling, but seeing as that's been sparse since May, I'm trying to add some regular bag work in, as I've noticed reduced work capacity and reduced gas tank.

i would imagine that its an ongoing process from learning from
ones mistakes. Id like to think that in terms of conditioning, doing both
are important maybe less weight training coming closer to competition date.
Terms of skills it comes down to personal choice/experience.
