Sorry to thread hijack...but what is the hype about bodyweight exercises? It seems like many martial artists sexually abuse them when good old lifting would probably help them more.

Second that.

BTW, your post comes off as a bit cornpone, Braydon. "Good ole" bodyweight exercises preceded "good ole" resistance training.

Braydon, I think the main reason that bodyweight exercise is prefered by martial artists/fighters is the convenience factor. Many dojos/gyms/etc just don't have the money, space or time to equip a group of aspiring fighters with the weights they'd need for a strength or conditioning circuit, for example, while it is easy and free to run that same group through a bodyweight regime. Free weights in the boxing/wrestling gym or martial art dojo environment can get a little unwieldy to use as each different person needs different loads, and then there's the fact that proper form would need to be taught for each lift. Bodyweight exercise is much simpler, and no less effective in these situations.

Both free weights and bodyweight exercise bring unique benefits and setbacks to the table, and I think they're both very important and very effective. Around here it seems you're either for free weights/bodyweight or vehemently against them and that's kinda stupid. Why limit yourself?
