Concussion Recovery

Hey Guys. I've been using this site to help educate myself on S&P, conditioning, nuitrition, ect. for over a year now, and have found it all exreamly helpful. Unfortunately, I suffered a concussion last thursday night, and am now unable to train. I went to see the doctor, and he said that I should return to training as I see fit. I guess I was hoping for a more precise answer. Has anybody on the forum ever suffered a concussion? If so, how long did you wait prior to resuming training? I will not resume until I feel 100%, and I would say that I currently feel about 75% (no headaches, just a bit woozy/dizzy with hazy eyesight). It's been 4 days. Thanks.

well I'd give it a week, maybe 2. Would weight lifting affect it? I mean unless you aren't doing anything full contact you shouldn't really bug it. So don't go right ahead and spar with people, just start slow. Set yourself a goal for strength or conditioning and work up to it.

You need to wait until you are 100% cognitively and physically. Then, you need to take 5 days, each day symptom free, progressing yourself from no impact to low impact to sport specific to full practice to full participation.

Unless you saw a neurologist, your doc won't know how to propperly progress you.

Just follow what you're body tells you. If you feel dizzy or in any way are in pain, just stop. Don't make anything worse than you need to.

Your doctor might think that when you say "train" you're just one of those curl monkeys at the chrome gym grunting and using gloves while doing preacher curls. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that when you say "train" that you're actually doing something bad ass. If this is true, just take it slowly and treat it like coming back from any other injury. Don't work too hard in the beginning, take it easy, and if you're feeling up to it, try a little more.

Ramp back up over a week or so I think is a good idea. I haven't had a concussion in ages, so i don't remember how long I waited. Probably not long enough, for I was young and stupid...

Appreciate the advice. I'm on day 5 now, and feeling a lot better. I still don't feel quite right though... I agree that a GP wouldn't know shit about head injuries. I train the typical beginner S&P 5x5, i.e., squat, press, DL, bench, BOR, etc. with lots of HIIT conditioning... I've been training since last october.

I wish I could say I received the concussion doing something remotely badass, but that's just not the case. I pulled my groin about two weeks ago attempting the "MMA Treadmill Workout" (only made it 3 min into the 9mph segment). So, instead of running, I decided I'd try to learn to swim. I was trying to learn Total Immersion swimming, which called for floating on your back while using your legs to propel you through the water. Well, I propelled myself head first into the solid pool wall... Been dazed and confused ever since... Lucky thing I wasn't KO'd!!! Fucken retarded, I know.

Dan's Knuckles gave the best advice in terms of being cautious. Since you weren't KO'd and you have no memory loss or anything that severe... you probably only have a grade 1 concussion. Returning to training after a week or so is entirely possible. Just don't put yourself in a position of taking another head shot for awhile.

Agreed

Wait until you feel fine and wait 5-7 days.

Don't fuck about with concussion because it can come back to bite you in the arse

Btw- I have never had concussion. I have been beaten about the head sparing and blanked out for a few milli seconds on my feet but that isn't as bad as proper concussion (system overload-> shut down)

edit after monger post

doesn't concussion mean a slight overload to the system (ie temporary shut down...I'm not talking unconscious)?

Concussion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's much more efficient to just read through this vs. explaining it. Sorry, I’m feeling a bit lazy at the moment.
