I am curious if you think that the dl takes more out of you than the squat? I feel the squat takes more out of me than dl. Is there any proof on this or do you base this on your lifetimes experience and the other strong bastards you associate with? Thanks
It does depend upon the style and technique of how you perform each of the lifts, but for the most part.....I have found that Deads take more out of you, ie, they are harder or take longer to recover from than squats.....but a guy with longer arms, that is somewhat of a natural deadliftier ( and has good leverage as well) it might be the opposite. The primary reason that the deadlift often takes more out of you, is that as it's name implies, it is done from a dead position, where in the squat, you are taking advantage of the stretch reflex and getting somewhat a groove rebound going...but again, its a generalization, and not a hard and fast rule.
the only hard and fast rules on lifting......are found on every post of every thread on bodybuilding.com....oh and on bb.com, you can justify the avoidance of an exercise, or in the proper way of doing an exercise, but simply saying you are trying to protect your rotator cuffs.

Jerry, I don't think I have especially long arms for my height, but I'm definitely not built for squatting. Anyway, it takes longer for me to recovery from deadlifting (my lower back stays sore forever), but squatting definitely takes more out of me. I really have to dig deep to motivate myself to squat, especially in the 8-14 range. Not so much with the DL.
