Grappling Technique You don't know a heel hook from a toe hold, and that's why you need to come here.

Looks like an omoplata in a gift box to me

Of course the guy will open his guard, then, but you can do the same thing by executing the gracie gift.

Pulling on the elbow that is preventing the underhook would break his posture and leave him in a lot of trouble. I think wilson is so explosive and quick that he wasnt worried about that. He is so good from the scramble thats probably exactly what he wants.

There is a thread that you can probably find on the Atama BJJ forum on mma.tv if you or anyone you know has a blue name to bump it (I don't). The thread is called the "Sao Paulo Guard Pass" or something like that. It had a lot of valuable information on this pass. A lot of the guys from Godoi use it. Sick pass.

I'm intrigued. I will be returning to the mats on Wednesday after a several week broken toe hiatus, and I will definitely be doing some slow brainstorming and experimenting. This will be included.

Yep. That's where I first heard about it a few weeks ago.

On the surface it seems like you can get triangled/omo'd/swept real easy, but apparently, it works for a lot of people.

I haven't tried it yet as I'm still trying to master my current favorite guard passes, but I have this in mind to attempt sometime in the near future.

Very cool - A quick question for those who have more experience with this though...What is Reis doing with his right arm from 4:15 to about 4:20? Is he just maintaining a deep underhook? I see a little further on he plants that hand to posture up and force the legs open, but it's not real clear what is happening with that arm while he's turning towards the camera prior to the guard break. Thanks in advance

yeah, I'm working on this myself now.

I'm also working on the "Boston Crab" style guard break Bill Cooper has been using recently

I think I have done a variation of that kind of guard pass, but its not as good as that one =(

Sometimes I would get swept othertimes it works flawlessly!

Interesting Frodo.

Once it's figured out which foot is on top in the closed guard, it seems like a reasonably safe pass attempt.
I have to disagree with the guys who say that it looks like an easy sweep or omaplata or whatever...
ALL techniques are risky. With proper technique the pass is as good as any.
I'll be trying this in class Thursday. Thanks Frodo.
