I understand for the SPORT of MMA training no-gi. I love training with a Gi. I get hotter and kind of a better work out. Plus learing to avoid those grips makes me feel faster when i do take the gi off.
As far as self defense goes; as already stated in this thread- people wear hoodies and coats. Hell, even some drunk ass getting out of a club and starting shit with you may have a dress shirt or a poloshirt with a collar you can exploit.

People are morons, imagine a 12 year old little leaguer coming to practice and telling the coach he doesn't want to use the aluminum bat because thats not what he sees the MLB hitters using - "I don't want to use that one, because it is unrealistic, when I get to the pro's I'll have to use wood"
I can not tell you how many fucking moron kids come in and think that they don't have to learn triangle defense 'cause
-"I'll just slam out like 'page" Or
-"I don't wanna work on my guard sweeps, I'm gonna be more of a wrestler and G'nP kind of fighter"
-Or my all time favorite during a 16 year olds third lesson ever "man I saw a move called the gogoplata on youtube, you think you could show me that instead of the same old armbar from mount, I got that one down"
All that said, some people only want to train nogi, good for them. But a good grappler who uses a gi and then takes it off is still a good grappler. Where as a good nogi guy puts a gi on and it is like starting over.
To each his own, but if you want to be a well rounded grappler, it's best to train in a gi sometimes and no gi other times.

I work in a club and have choked out guys numerous times with their polo shirts, dress shirts etc. I even got in a nice judo throw once from a collar and sleeve grip on a sport jacket, knocked his ass out cold when he hit the cement.

Congratulations.
Most of the smart, well-adjusted people you will meet in life have probably not been in a fight for years. That should probably tell you something.

Judging by where I train, highly unlikely. The Roger Gracie Academy has classes every day except Sunday, generally either two advanced and one beginner (along with kids classes and privates), or the other way around.
In that packed schedule, there is only a single nogi class. It is by far the least popular: IIRC, they used to have two, cut down to one, and now even that sole nogi class is 30 minutes shorter (so just an hour) and on a Friday, when few people turn up.
That's only going by one school, of course, though I've heard people say its more of an issue in the US, given the strong wrestling background, meaning nogi is a lot more popular than it is here in the UK.

It tells me that most people who go out to the night clubs in south Florida are morons who can't hold their liquor and don't know that the guys in suits in the corners of the clubs are sober and there to "help" them out of the club when they start acting like tough guy idiots, slapping bartenders, grabbing the dancers, fighting over who bumped into whom and spilled the drink on their "badass" affliction tee's, flexing their overworked traps and bi's for all to see.

funny cuz you see alot of guys who have done gi for half there life go to no gi and do great .
cant say the same for the no gi guys .
in some cases no gi can water down a ground game while gi can only make it better .

Can't see it happening.
I started no-gi, then went gi when I heard one of the senior guys in the club saying that it's probably better to have a good grounding in Gi before dabbling in no-gi. Then a whole load of other arguments (which are irrelevant here as we don't want to go down the Gi-vs-Nogi debate... AGAIN!) came up and the decision has, for me, been re-enforced. I don't think I'll ever train strictly no-gi.
Bottom line: yeah the whole MMA craze will have more people STARTING no-gi and not all of those will become hardcore love'o'the game grapplers. With that said a few WILL and they'll probably train dressed as Boy George if it's ever decided that it adds another element.
Gi's here to stay.
