Anyone have videos or anything for some sweeps from guard? I know the Scissor(sp?) sweep and that is about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

it's all good dude, you're just curious. if you want to be good at sweeps though, you might look into a different guard than full...half guard, butterfly guard and x guard are some really good guards that combo together really well...de la riva (even though i don't like it personally) is good with those guards too...now hit up some youtube.

The closed guard is underrated. You have to get a competent closed guard. The pendulum, flower, scissor, and hook sweeps are very basic sweeps which work very well. Getting good at these sweeps will improve the rest of your jiu-jitsu. Noobs often find that they need the newest Eddie Bravo move and that those basics don't work. More and more, I find that they do work well - I just didn't have the timing or a few details right back when I started jiu-jitsu.

good point...i looked at it from the view that "he's probably thinking what i used to think". I used to never use any other guard than closed guard for the longest time, I just didn't see the need for it. But I think going outside of the closed guard to learn a few sweeps from other guards helps you understand the principles of what it takes to sweep somebody. You start to feel shifts of weight more and things like that. The sweeps you named need to be learned by everyone as a base.


P.S. You really think the closed guard is UNDERrated?

No, closed guard is underrated. I was the opposite: with short legs I never used closed guard. But not I use it all the time as a type of clinch. It should not be a static type of guard; instead I use the closed guard to push and pull a lot off balancing my opponent and making an angle for myself. I like to work arm drags and arm traps from here too, just like from standing. Sometimes the most frustrating people can be caught or swept most effectively with a good closed guard.

The scissor sweep is my go to sweep. It is basic but it works all the time.
