wht was the hardest part of grappling for you to pick up on

In regards to your overall grappling game, which aspect was the hardest for you to become competent/eff at; i know alot of people crosstrain now, but still have strengths in their base are. What aspect of grappling gave u the most trouble and do you feel that you gotten to the point where that area has become maybe not a strength; but an area your at least competent in.

1)sprawls 2)guardwork 3)sweeps 4)takedowns (clinch, throws, shoots, trips) 5)submissions (setups, chaining, transitioning off of takedowns) 6) def 7)ground control (maintaining top/ working from the top)

for me i would have to say that it was probably spplying submissions; being that i came in from no real grappling base and everyone i worked w/was decidedly better, i was always trying to survive initially..not even trying to be off. Once i got my def on point and was able to reverse or control position, often got comfortable doing that a) cus i did not want to get caught and b)cus the attempt would often be stymied by my tech superior opp.

Only in the past two/three years or so have i gotten to the point where i feel comfortable applying submissions and attempting to chain them if one misses goin to another or looking for the submission consistently instead of trying to def and gain top position.

Well I just started, but for me so far its maintaining position.

Im fairly strong and athletic, and I know how to do the basic subs decently, and my defense is OK against other beginners.. but the basics of just maintaining control i'm having trouble with

When i reverse or sweep and end up on top, I never seem to just properly get my weight down on them and stabalize my position. Part of it is having no technique yet, and part of it is that i'm just a typical noob who always looks for the sub, rather then "position before submission"

I'm a fast learner though so i think in a few months i'll be pretty good

The hardest part for me still to pick up on is pretty much everything, the only thing i think ive ever been half way decent in is submission defense.

The flow, being able to actually use the techniques you can do pretty damn great in drills, but go to hell when you actually have an opponent beating your ass, so to speak.

Nowadays, im a bit better at the whole, being relaxed and not focusing on making a submission but rather look for openings and so forth.

None of it was particularly harder than any other part. Not to say it was all easy, I just don't remember any one area lagging way behind the rest

The guard. I'm actually more comfortable being under side control and working for a reversal.
