I thought a ronin was a travelling fighter. That is where Newton got his name from.

Yes, a traveling warior. Long and complecated tradition short: samurais are warriors with a master, ronins were the ones for hire.

I never understood why Newton took the name, I thought there was a certain amount of shame in being Ronin

Maybe because he is a mixed martial artist with no style as his master? I've been called a ronin for training at so many different places. Personally, I can't stop thinking about Ronin Warriors...

I know that in Japan students who don't make it through college entrance exams are labeled Ronins in a derogatoy way.

Apparently Ronins were looked down upon by other samurai, but at the same time envied for their free lifestyle.

I always associate it as a term to describe someone who trains at a bunch of different schools, in several styles...like Newton.

Frodo's a Ronin.

Here's a link to, what else, wikipedia:

From what I read a fair while ago. Ronins were the outlaw samurai. The Yakuza these days still have certain rules and discipline related to the ronin samurai way. Likw cutting the pinky finger off for instance, it made holding a sword very difficult in the old days.

so it's just a name? the acutally style doesn't really differ from any other style correct?
