Another thing that works real well is what Brian McLaughlin did repeatedly to Ryan Hall in their 2nd match. As soon as Ryan sits up Brian had his head buried directly into Ryans chest and just guided him back down.

The first part of this is right on...if you're in someone's guard, you cannot let them sit up on you. It's not just the hip bump, you can also get pulled down for the scissor sweep, cross-collar choked, etc. There are a lot of things that can happen if someone gets their head up next to yours while you are in their guard, and they are pretty much all bad.
Ask you instructor, or even any blue belt, how to position your hands in guard to control this.
The second part of this is also true, but comes with a caveat: if your opponent figures out that you are going to push him down with your head, he may well feint the hip bump in order to get you to break your own posture, which opens up triangles etc.
