Cauliflower Ear

One of my training partners earned this today in training.

He says it sounds like there's a hand over his ear all the time.
I keep telling him not to yell at me.

NASTY. Has he drained it yet? I would recommend draining it so he gets his hearing back.

Man, if that was because of one hit, or he got it in one day then that must have been qiute big blow..

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't cauliflower ear caused by blood getting between the skin and the cartiledge (or whatever it is that makes the shape of the ear)? Meaning that almost all of the skin in his ear had to be loose from the cartiledge.

Anyway, I would suggest that he drained it quickly. AND because usually if you drain it, more blood will slowly fill up the ear, i would keep somekind of pipe etc, about the size of a pencil in my ear for a couple of days to prevent swelling that would cause problems with hearing...

Thats nasty. He needs to get that drained within 48 hours. The longer he waits the less "normal" that is ear going to look. That is unless he wants to go as Randy Coulture for halloween next year .

I know certain plastic surgeons are able to do a procedure to return califlower ears to a more natural looking shape. However I think only certain surgeons are doing it and it is not 100% in returning the ear to its predamaged state.

I had a buddy on my high school wrestling team who got it all scraped out and stuff after it hardened. His ear looked pretty normal after the precedure.

Yes it can. You would have to go see an ENT specialist. I've had both my ears done once, and its looking like I might have to have the left done again soon.

What they do is slice the ear open along the face and then take the equivalent to a sharpened ice cream scoop and scrape the extra "stuff" out. Then the sew it back up. Can't get it wet for like two weeks when the stitches come out.
