what leg locks are okay in BJJ tournaments?
I found out today that I can't do all the Sambo leg locks that I know. A very upsetting moment.
what is legal to do, what is not?

It completely depends on the tournament, your division (gi or no gi), and your experience level.
Naga allows all leg locks in nogi.
IBJJF rules only allow straight ankle locks until you get to purple belt.

In Az, Desert Quest only allows straight knee bars. It's the same for our boxing commisions MMA rules.

Actually until brown belt. Then you can add knee bars, toe holds, and compression locks on the knees.

At white belt you can only do straight ankle locks without crossing your legs. This includes ye olde triangling the feet of the guy sitting on your back with crossed hooks.
At purple you can do the ankle lock with 1 leg crossing his leg from the inside out but but not while crossing your own legs.
At brown and black you can do the calf slicer, kneebar and toehold but still with only one leg crossing his from the inside out and no crossing your own legs.
If you ever cross your leg over his from the outside in you get DQ'd.
If you ever cross your legs and hold his foot like you're trying to go for a footlock, even if you have your legs crossed from the inside out and even if you're not really going for a footlock you will get DQ'd.

So a straight ankle lock from 50/50 (your legs are figure-four around his leg, with your inside leg crossing over his leg, and your outside leg locked over your inside leg) is always illegal??

no, the 50/50 is legal when your leg is crossing outside but if you are reaping (i.e crossing inside) it is illegal.

I wonder what he is talking about when he says "and no crossing your own legs" then

The 50/50 position is legal but you have to uncross your feet before going for any leglocks from it.
If not and your opponent taps you get DQ'd.

Never heard anything close to that.
