What is grappling in a cage like anyway?
Had a few stupid questions for a while now:
- Is the typical mat in a cage soft or hard? The UFC's octagon mat has always looked harder than a regular mat but is that just because it's one piece??
- How come MMA fighters don't get crazy mat burn from grappling in a cage w/o a shirt? I have done gi and no-gi training and when someone is in my guard (no-gi) and I'm trying to position I rub skin off on the mats all the time even though I'm wearing a shirt.

The cage mats are usually not that soft.
As far as mat burn goes, fighters are usually pretty banged up in general after a fight, so I wouldn't be so sure that they don't have any mat burn.

rolling with no shirt depends on the material you roll on and the sweat. i've rolled on mats that were fine for no shirt if you were a little sweaty.

I've rolled in a cage before. Didn't feel any different. I think the obvious difference is the fact that there's a fence and you don't have a referee re-starting you in the center. Action is continuous and you can be pressed up against the fence.

Finishing takedowns up against the cage is a different thing altogether. Sometimes easier, sometimes trickier.
The one thing I never hear complaints about (which drives me crazy,) is getting the point of my elbow caught in the chain link when I'm against the cage. It is a little thing and only happens once in a while, but I have bad elbows and it drives me absolutely nuts!

I don't have a ton of experience, as I only had one fight, but my cage mat felt exactly like a wrestling mat.

i agree, the only difference is the fence, which can be used as a tool.

Isn't the flooring in the cage canvas? It doesn't look or sound very soft at all.

Cages can be covered in canvas or vinyl, usually over 1" or 1 1/2" of foam. Don't know what the UFC uses, although I see a lot of people pouring water on the floor, which usually means canvas. The floor usually has a bit of give, too, so that helps.
Second what HG says about the fence and takedowns. Also true of grappling. Guard is a very different thing when your head is up against the fence.

Also when you can be punched in the face. That changes up things a bit as well.
