So long as the ref can't confuze it for a neck crank you're fine.

i.e. Don't pull guard, lay flat on your stomach... doesn't work nearly as well though...

Well you must be doing hadaka-jime wrong then. It's meant to constrict blood flow to the head by squeezing the two arteries in your neck. Not your wind pipe. The ezekiel or soto guruma (I think it's called) is a different story, but you should brush up on your chokes if you crush the windpipe with your RNC.

It's sode guruma and it is supposed to target the two arteries but never seems to come out that way....

I believe your wrong on this one. There are two variations of the hadaka-jime. There is the rnc version and the more traditional version (and less effective imo) where you use your forarm to squash your oponents windpipe as seen here: http://judoinfo.com/hadaka.jpg

My sensei doesn't teach it like that, and says that it's illegal. The variation he shows is almost like a neck crank, by cranking the persons head to the side, but he said the correct way of doing it is having the elbow in-line with the chin or nose.
