If you're looking for some lost underground art, you're going to be disappointed. The "Kosen Judo" you speak of is, in all honesty, simply Judo. The only difference is that the focus was more on newaza.

There is actually going to be a Judo Newaza tournament at the The PanAmerican Masters tournament this November in Mass.

I am looking forward to checking it out.

I have done a couple, similar rules
very simple and very fun

start from knees

5 minutes with a 2 minute overtime if no score

Score by pin or sub, if it is a draw after 5+2 the ref decides

Found out tonight that the grip and stance that I am being encouraged to use is one my sensei picked up whilst training in Russia. It's basically a squared off stance with my right foot slightly forward and a tight grip on my opponents back beneath their shoulder blade when i can get it. Its working really well for me. When i still have the traditional grip, i can push them away with my right arm as they come in for a throw due to the way im balanced with my right foot slightly ahead. Then when they do make it in closer I can snap on the shoulder blade grip and go for a harai goshi. Definitely not fool proof against a better player but it's working a lot better for me anyway.

We have grappling divisions in our tourneys too. Do any other clubs have divisions that are focussed on newaza? I went to a tournament that revolved around points. To win, you had to get 8, and an ippon throw was worth 4, wazari, 3, etc. Submissions ended the fight immediately, daki-age was permitted(Never saw it thankfully), cross grips were allowed with no time limit too. 25 second pins were 4 points too, you'd have to switch to a different hold for the next 25 seconds to get the 8 points....that's a 50 second hold down! Matches were two, two minute rounds with a small break in between. It was alot of fun.

Gotta love and hate those practices. Sometimes you get owned so bad all you can do is sit back and respect it.

Anyone who hasn't had a practice like that hasn't been doing Judo very long, or their name is Mifune.
