I like the fact that I'm going to have to fight for my belts. IMO it will be much moe satisfying. Do you still compete in tournaments and stuff?

I fought for mine before they changed the system in the UK. The sense of satisfaction is far higher and im very glad i got the oppertunity to do it. Im a firm believer that fighting for belts leads to people competing who wouldnt otherwise and this increases the standard of judo overall. I dont like the idea that people who have never competed can work around with black belts on, let alone teach.

I'm with the JudoScotland and we still have to fight for our belt's. I guess we must not be part of the wider British association.

You're right by the way. When i restarted Judo a few months ago i was only really interested in doing it for fitness but now that i have the bug i am looking forward to getting out there and winning my belts the hard way. I doubt i would have competed at my age if i didn't have to.

Yeah thats cool man. We get some guys in from other clubs sometimes and Its cool for me to watch our blackbelts compete with theres. A lot of the guys are so powerful and technical that its an amazing spectacle for a beginner like me.

I had my first fight against another clubs yellow belt and won a couple of weeks ago. I am a red belt (the belt you get here after white, when you first get your licence) but I think i will be getting promoted in the next few weeks due to things some of the top coaches have been saying. Then it will be Orange, then i can fight for my green as soon as i want. Can't wait!!! I won't fight until i think I'm ready tho.

It really depends on the amount of hours he has on the mat doing groundwork. Most shodan (ok, maybe not in the United States) roll at a blue belt level. I've heard that most people who earn a blue belt have around 200-400 hours of groundwork under their belt. Since most Judo clubs spend around 20-30% of their class time on the ground a Judo guy with 5 years experience in Judo will have between 200-400 hours of time spent on the ground. That's only with training 3x a week for about an hour and a half. Obviously if you train more often a Judo guy will be *there* much sooner. Heck, I roll at an entry-level blue belt level right now (because of the hours spent) and I've only been doing Judo for three years. I say this based on some of the BJJ blue belts I have rolled with and can hang with. Granted, when I do ground in Judo I take a BJJ approach and not the traditional Judo approach.

Im kinda dissapointed in that to be honest. I knew Judo was inferior to BJJ on teh floor but i didn't think the gap was that large.

Howdy chaps, good to see this old thread still going.

Read the first 30 pages or so on a slow day here and can remember where I was when I wrote a lot of them, really nice to read back over it.

Hope everyone is well.
