from the rec guys you will learn good throws, but it is up to you to learn how to use them really, there will probably be more ground sparring as that is easier on the body so you may get a cfeel for it atleast. if you have an outlet for real sparring I think you will pick up useful stuff

I don't blame you for questioning me, I have train submission wrestling, and right now I'm training freestyle/folk wrestling privately with a coach. I have good submission defense which is the only reason I can survive. Since I couldn't train often a gym due to money problems , me and my friend train the basics as often as we can.

I have good understanding of position, so if someone got me in crossbody, full or whatever mount I know I'm in a bad spot and need to get out. But because I practice the easy to learn basics a lot I know to keep my hands tuck in, my posture good and never bent, the importance of shrimping, keeping my weight evenly balance, and my chin down so I do not get choke, triangle, or armlock. Oh and never letting my opponent squeeze there legs together or even let them touch when they are going for a leg lock because I know that is the secret to the leverage and power in the leg lock.

Purples dominate me positionally , because I lack the experience to really put up a good offense. I do get tap by them but it's not something like a walk in the park unless they are a lot bigger than me. Blues I am more confident with because I survive much better , and if I had more mat time maybe I could submit a blue once or twice during sparring. I have been learning the best I can through books, instructs, taking privates, going to the gym when I can for the last 5 years but it has never been consist with a gym. Due to moving, me being a broke teenage with no car, or just where I was living.

I will never say I'm better than a purple or blue, but many people I have spar against have comment I was good so I think i'm a pretty good beginner.

Jim Bregman - 1964 Olympic Bronze, 1965 World Championship Bronze

Thats it, but when it comes to top level American Judoka, pickings are slim.

I've never really had any injuries caused by judo. I once though I would be paralyzed after a throw though. True story.
